Apparently, Brown thinks it will be a popular move to bring back the person who helped Blair destroy democracy in the Labour Party. But this comment on the Guardian's blog pages was absolutely naughty...

I expect Mandelson to stand firmly behind the Prime Minister, thank him for the invitation to re-enter his personal circle, inform him of his need to stay rigid in response to thrusting upcomers, and, despite the exhausting efforts of maintaining his dominance when the probing becomes too intense, never failing to drive his point home.

Repeatedly.

Hmmm...don't know what to say about this move...it's either brilliant or bloody dangerous for Brown...will wait and see what happens....

  One big pity is that he won't be standing for election to the House of Commons. I would like to see if he is able to persuade a voting public that there is a point to his presence in our public life.

    I think he's very knowledgeable about the markets and Europe and is by no means a fool...devious maybe but clearly could judge what the public wanted when he went for Blair not Brown when the election was held for the successor to John Smith...personally I think that was a disaster for Labour, but he went for appearance and personality over and above socialist ideals and we basically lost the old labour party in one foul swoop...now that Brown is the PM and looks as if he's gained a lot of confidence over the last couple of weeks sufficient for him to realise Mandelson could be a very useful ally...Mandelson wants Brown to hold the middle ground and not give the Tories a chance to step in and say they represent it now...old story, if you don't woo the middle classes, you won't win the election...and a large number of people in Britain now consider themselves middle class...a too greater swing to the Left and you've lost them, and Mandelson will be there to warn Brown when he thinks such and such a policy might be construed as old left...no use pining for the old Labour Party...we lost that a long time ago, and it can't be resurrected so now it's tactics...he who controls the middle ground will win the next election...and providing Mandelson doesn't do something unwise again, he may well steer the party onto much safer ground...I certainly don't want to see Cameron in government...he's entirely lacking in gravitas and reminds me far too much of Blair...and Clegg can't win, and also a clone of Blair, so there's only Brown left...

      His livelihood as an adult has been made by putting his hand out for public money for 'loans' from his mates. He knows absolutely nothing about markets that his advisers don't tell him. The EU, the world's largest market, has been bullied by China, Russia and the USA in the past few years and all Mandy has learned in that time is how to preen, strut and back down. The man is good at only one thing - selling out the public interest while evading the blame. Remember the Millenium Dome?

Well, you can all bet that the Gorgon is surrounding himself with pro business/anti trade union mandy boy because he knows the financial apocalypse is about to wreak havoc within the next year.

Knowledgable? if you mean how mandy can best feather his own poculiar nest then I agree!
In the sense he may be an asset to this country... get a life.
Here we have a government bereft of talent, ideas and above all common dog. Brown has lost the plot, he is chancellor, and will never be anything more, much to the chagrin of the eyebrow-man; except maybe as the lap-dog to Blair.
With the appointment of Mandelson, Gordon has not shot himself in the foot, he has shot himself through the heart.
