Yes, we quite often have a paper to spread round the lounge floor on a Sunday when we are relaxing... that's worth paying for. It's useful for lining the squid cages afterwards as well.

I like the web site too, but I have already stopped using sites that wanted subscriptions, and there will always be someone with a free one.

I like to hold a newspaper in my hand, I like the feel and the sound of rustling pages on a sunday morning - I won't be givig anthing up as i already pay for my news x

Well, I shan't be paying the Times, either, unless doing so would remove all adverts from their pages and allow some sort of user filtering to eliminate subjects I don't want to be bothered with.

I find the "World" section of "The Australian" very useful, especially in early morning UK, because by then Australian news reportage has matured into the day.

It's so silly, I mean the cat is already out of the bag. All that free news out there, why would you want to pay to read it? As an example, the Sydney Morning Herald has everything on their website every day that they have in the paper, except for the letters and editorial comment. I used to buy the paper every day but now i only buy it on Mondays for the week's TV guide. If they decide to charge for the website I won't pay for it, so they'll get no money. I have no idea what these folks were thinking when they made it all free.

Dur. It all goes to show that what we tend to believe (in subjects of which we know little) is probably just as suspect. I am always spotting mistakes, or grossly misleading oversimplifications for the lowest common denominator, in IT and science-related subjects, not to mention statistics and probability etc. Since journos started writing their own stuff and all the subs got sacked, they only check for potential libel I imagine.
